How do I…Onboard with PrescribeIT? (For Prescribers)

By Michelle Culverwell

PrescribeIT® is Canada’s national e-prescribing service. It integrates seamlessly between an electronic medical record (EMR) and the pharmacy management system (PMS), enabling prescribers to digitally send prescription data directly to a patient’s pharmacy of choice. In this occasional blog series, we’ll explore some of PrescribeIT’s features and functionalities in-depth. Let’s begin by examining the onboarding process for prescribers.

How do I…Onboard with PrescribeIT? (For Prescribers)

Gone are the days of handwriting prescriptions and willing fax machines to cooperate. PrescribeIT® is designed to fit into prescribers’ already busy days, seamlessly integrating into your EMR. It requires minimal changes to your prescribing workflow, utilizes clinical communication features in place of faxes and phone calls with pharmacists, and enhances medication safety through features like dispense notifications and e-renewals.

It’s a modern prescribing process for the modern clinician. But what does the onboarding process look like for prescribers?

Confirm that we’re live in your area

PrescribeIT® is currently live in communities in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador, with plans to roll out to more provinces in the coming months. You’ll also want to make sure that your EMR vendor has PrescribeIT® integrated; you can browse a list of our vendor partners here, and find PrescribeIT® enabled pharmacies and clinics in your area.

Fill out your Application of Interest

Your next step is to fill out an Application of Interest. Once you hit “submit,” you’ll receive an immediate email acknowledging receipt of your application. From there, a PrescribeIT® team member will reach out within the next week.

During that time, you can get a head start by exploring some of the educational content on the PrescribeIT® website. Ask a Peer connects you with health professionals already using PrescribeIT®; you can browse their answers or submit a question of your own. You can also explore the Learning Centre and its online modules.

Get connected

The PrescribeIT® team will connect with you to gather additional information required to get you enrolled and start the technical configuration of your PrescribeIT ® account.

Once we have your contact information and the technical configuration is started, it’s a good idea to complete the three compliance items as soon as you can. Before you start using PrescribeIT®, you’ll need to:

  • Sign the user agreement
  • Complete privacy and security training
  • Complete identity validation

Once each user completes these three essential items, their PrescribeIT® account can be activated.

Receive training

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, our team has been able to conduct the entire onboarding process virtually, including training sessions, if requested. Your EMR vendor should have a training manual with PrescribeIT® integration instructions. Depending on your specific vendor, they may have virtual live training and/or videos available as well.

Get support

Running into difficulties? Your first line of defence is your EMR vendor; you can contact them directly for support. If you require further assistance, you can email the PrescribeIT® team here.

Get started today!

With our partners, we’re working actively to scale PrescribeIT® across Canada. Over 6000 prescribers representing more than nine million patients are enrolled in the service — you can take the first step towards joining them today.

Just fill out the application of interest, and we look forward to connecting with you soon.
