Streamlining documentation and reducing administrative burden for primary care clinicians.

What is an AI Scribe?

AI scribes are digital tools powered by artificial intelligence and natural language processing that assist clinicians by transcribing and summarizing patient interactions in real-time. AI scribes reduce the administrative burden on clinicians by automating repetitive tasks such as documenting patient visits, updating medical records, and summarizing treatment plans.

Program Overview

Infoway launched the national AI Scribe Program in June 2025 to support primary care clinicians across Canada in adopting AI-powered documentation tools that help reduce administrative burden, improve documentation workflows and give clinicians more time back for care.

Developed and delivered by Infoway in partnership with provinces and territories, the program provided fully funded, one-year licenses for pre-qualified AI scribe tools to eligible primary care clinicians.

Now enrolling more than 12,000 primary care clinicians across the country, this program demonstrates how combining national vendor prequalification, jurisdictional collaboration, clinician choice, implementation monitoring and real-world evaluation supports responsible AI adoption at scale.

The evaluation of Infoway’s AI Scribe Program represents the largest national implementation and evaluation of AI scribes in primary care conducted globally.

Read the report to learn more about the program’s latest results, including the impact of AI scribes on administrative burden, cognitive load, clinical workflows and patient interactions.

How do AI Scribes Support Interoperability?

Infoway prioritizes solutions that are interoperable, scalable, and sustainable, creating a foundation that benefits clinicians and patients alike. This approach includes ensuring AI scribes meet data exchange, cybersecurity, and usability standards.

The long-term goal is to help clinicians collect, use and share patient health information more effectively while improving documentation quality at the point of care. As AI scribes continue to evolve beyond documentation toward broader clinical workflow support, Infoway’s work with vendors, jurisdictions, clinicians, patients, and health system partners will help advance tools that are safe, trusted, interoperable and aligned with the needs of Canadian care delivery.
