Canada Health Infoway Selects Pre-Qualified Vendors for National AI Scribe Program

May 8, 2025 (TORONTO) – Canada Health Infoway (“Infoway”) is pleased to announce the selection of pre-qualified vendors for the AI Scribe Program, a national initiative that provides up to 10,000 fully funded, one-year licenses for AI-powered documentation tools to eligible primary care clinicians across Canada.

Canada Health Infoway Selects Pre-Qualified Vendors for National AI Scribe Program

The AI Scribe Program is designed to reduce administrative burden, streamline clinical workflows, and give clinicians more time to focus on patient care. By leveraging artificial intelligence, these tools help support more efficient clinical documentation, contributing to a more connected and sustainable health system.

“AI scribes are about more than just technology, they’re about helping clinicians spend less time on paperwork and more time with patients,” said Abhi Kalra, Executive Vice President of Connected Care at Infoway. “Through an extensive and competitive national process, we’ve selected a group of trusted, high-performing vendors, marking a meaningful step forward in supporting clinician well-being, strengthening primary care, and demonstrating how innovation can be thoughtfully applied to address real challenges in our health system.”

Following the cross-Canada Request for Pre-Qualification (RFPQ) launched in February 2025, vendors were selected through a rigorous process based on their ability to meet national standards and unique regional needs, support secure data sharing, meet clinical practice requirements, and align with the Shared Pan-Canadian Interoperability Roadmap.

The rigorous evaluation criteria included vendor capabilities, privacy, cybersecurity, EMR integration, and clinical usability. In addition, many of the selected AI Scribe vendors demonstrated the ability to integrate with the majority of electronic medical record (EMR) systems currently deployed across primary care in Canada.

Infoway is also collaborating closely with all provinces and territories to implement the AI Scribe Program. Program availability, access, and execution may vary by jurisdiction, with each approach tailored to align with the unique needs of the region and clinical practice requirements.

Program Launch

The AI Scribe Program is scheduled to launch in June 2025. Eligible primary care clinicians will have the opportunity to access an AI scribe solution from the list of pre-qualified vendors within their region, with the confidence that the tool will meet the unique needs of their practice and align with their jurisdiction's health system.

Primary care clinicians can still express their interest and sign up to learn more and receive updates in advance of the program launching here.

A Pathway for AI in Clinical Workflows

The AI Scribe Program is the first step in a broader effort to integrate similar technologies into Canada’s healthcare system. The AI Scribe Program introduces a maturity model that supports a structured framework for advancing interoperability, progressively enhancing AI scribes' integration with digital health systems. It defines a clear vision for improving data quality and interoperability by aligning AI scribe adoption with pan-Canadian standards, ensuring these tools seamlessly connect within the broader health ecosystem.

Future phases will explore scalability, deeper EMR integration, and AI-assisted decision support, ensuring AI-powered tools remain trusted, secure, and effective for Canadian clinicians now and into the future.
