Measuring the Impact of AI Scribes in Canadian Primary Care: Findings from a Nationwide Evaluation
Presenters:
Emily Ha, Research Associate, Centre for Digital Health Evaluation
WCH Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care (WIHV)
Onil Bhattacharyya, Women's College Hospital
Barry Xu, Manager, Data Science & Analytics, Canada Health Infoway

Primary care providers (PCPs) experience substantial administrative burdens, contributing to burnout and challenges sustaining high-quality care. Artificial intelligence (AI) scribes have emerged as a potential solution to reduce documentation workload and support clinical practice. In 2025, a national program provided over 10,000 Canadian PCPs with one-year AI scribe licenses. This study reports findings from the first pan-Canadian evaluation of AI scribes, assessing their effects on administrative burden, cognitive load, time savings, and clinical data quality.

11:15 – 11:30 AM

Determinants of Clinical AI Use and Priorities for Support: Insights from Canadian Physicians
Presenters:
Mirou Jaana, University of Ottawa
Claire Cao, Data Science Analyst, Canada Health Infoway
Barry Xu, Manager, Data Science & Analytics, Canada Health Infoway

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly applied in clinical practice to support diagnostics, documentation, and care coordination. However, adoption remains uneven, with most research focused on the U.S. This study investigates determinants of clinical AI use among Canadian physicians and assesses whether perceived priorities for enabling AI adoption (i.e. policy, regulation, digital transformation, training, leadership, readiness) vary by physician/practice characteristics and actual AI experience. Findings can inform strategies for safe, equitable health workforce Ai scale-up.

Enhancing Access to Digital Health Insights Using a RAG-Based AI Chatbot
Presenters:
Ruilin Shan, Analyst, Data Science, Canada Health Infoway

Canada Health Infoway publishes national digital health survey data, but accessing specific insights through traditional search methods can be time-consuming. This project aims to develop an AI-powered chatbot that enables users to quickly retrieve reliable digital health insights. The objective is to demonstrate how a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) chatbot can improve accessibility, efficiency, and trust when interacting with validated survey data.

Preparing Canada’s Future Physicians for Digital Practice: Findings from a National Survey of Medical Students
Presenters:
Rashaad Bhyat, Senior Clinical Leader, Canada Health Infoway

Digital health is increasingly embedded in clinical care, yet medical education lags behind rapidly evolving systems. Future physicians must navigate electronic health records, digital platforms, and AI tools, but limited evidence describes medical students' preparedness for digital practice. This study characterizes Canadian medical students' exposure to digital health, confidence performing digital health-related clinical tasks, attitudes toward adoption, and perceived education gaps.
