Implementing AI Scribes in Compliance with Privacy Requirements

About the AI Scribe Program

Canada Health Infoway’s AI Scribe Program is a national initiative designed to help reduce administrative burden for primary care clinicians by funding the use of pre-qualified AI-powered medical scribe solutions. The program enables eligible clinicians to choose from nine pre-qualified vendors whose solutions meet baseline clinical, technical, and privacy/security requirements.

Implementation Guide and Supporting Resources

Primary care clinicians who want to use an AI scribe solution must ensure that their use of it complies with the legislative requirements in their respective jurisdictions prior to using the scribe service.

Canada Health Infoway has developed resources to assist primary care teams implementing AI scribes in meeting regulatory privacy requirements. These province-specific AI scribe implementation toolkits are practical resources meant to assist teams in setting up privacy safeguards when implementing AI scribes.

Alberta and Quebec are provided with specific resources while all other provinces can consult the Pan-Canadian resources.

Alberta Resources

The AI Scribe Privacy Impact Assessment Template was developed in coordination with the OIPC of Alberta. The generic custodian information inserted has been provided for custodian reference but must be adapted to your clinic. Infoway has pre-populated templates for each AI Scribe Vendor operating in Alberta from its program. Contact your chosen vendor to receive a copy of the template.

Note:
Information and Privacy Commissioners in all jurisdictions provide guidance documents and/or templates for developing PIAs, including where PIAs are not legally required. Infoway encourages all custodians to review these resources before adopting an AI Scribe solution.
