March 5, 2019 (Toronto) — PrescribeITTM is well on its way to becoming Canada’s national e-prescribing service as more jurisdictions, vendors and retailers have come on board and have committed to making prescribing easier and more convenient for patients and clinicians.
Recently, New Brunswick became the third province to launch PrescribeITTM, joining Ontario and Alberta. In addition, PrescribeITTM has signed agreements with seven other provinces and territories and is working collaboratively to develop roll-out plans.
“It is remarkable that in less than three years, we have agreements in place with 10 jurisdictions representing a majority of the Canadian population,” said Michael Green, President and CEO, Canada Health Infoway. “We are already expanding PrescribeIT’s reach in Ontario, Alberta and New Brunswick, and we are confident that the success of these roll-outs will encourage other jurisdictions to ramp up their plans.”
New retailers have recently come on board, including Sobeys Inc., Lawtons Drugs, Safeway Inc. and Medical Pharmacies, bringing the total potential PrescribeITTM enabled pharmacies in these 10 jurisdictions to more than 4,500. There is also one new electronic medical record (EMR) vendor — InputHealth — bringing the total number of EMR vendors to 10, and two new pharmacy management system (PMS) vendors — Pharmacy Technology Solutions (a division of McKesson Canada), and Fillware Technologies — bringing the total number of PMS vendors to four.
“We are very excited to welcome more EMR and PMS vendors and to see the rapidly growing interest in PrescribeITTM from clinicians throughout the country,” Green said. “Together we will eliminate the use of paper prescriptions and help Canadians experience better health outcomes.”
Canada Health Infoway is working with Health Canada, the provinces and territories, and industry stakeholders to develop, operate and maintain the national e-prescribing service known as PrescribeITTM. PrescribeITTM will serve all Canadians, pharmacies and prescribers and provide safer and more effective medication management by enabling prescribers to transmit a prescription electronically between a prescriber’s electronic medical record (EMR) and the pharmacy management system (PMS) of a patient’s pharmacy of choice. PrescribeITTM will protect Canadians’ personal health information from being sold or used for commercial activities.
