Clinician Peer Network: connecting health care professionals across Canada

Infoway’s Clinician Peer Network is a pan-Canadian peer-to-peer program that promotes the active engagement of health care professionals in the implementation and effective use of health information and communication technology (ICT) systems across Canada.

The networks brings together natural leaders – physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals to:

  • share best practices and build new knowledge,
  • provide clinical leadership to develop expertise and facilitate learning,
  • identify common and unique enablers and barriers to clinical transformation using ICT solutions.

How the network functions

The successful implementation and use of ICTs – such as electronic health records (EHRs) and electronic medical records (EMRs) - requires clinicians to be engaged at every step of the adoption process.

To support this, Infoway collaborates with the provinces and territories through the pan-Canadian Clinician Peer Network to create a strong community of peer leaders to act as advisors and change agents.

Regional peer-to-peer networks have been established under the national program to respond to local clinician needs.  Each network is aligned to the national program objective to sustain and accelerate clinical engagement with a focus on supporting one or more specific initiatives. For example, Peer Leaders work closely with their colleagues to help them optimize clinical value through practice and process changes during EMR adoption.

In addition, through pan-Canadian collaborative engagement of clinical stakeholders, leading practices and lessons learned in ICT adoption and use are shared across the country.
