Infoway has 12 investment programs, each of which has a unique development strategy. Together, these investment programs fund projects that will result in a comprehensive network of interoperable electronic health record (EHR) and EMR solutions, ultimately transforming the way Canadians receive care.

Under Infoway's investment programs, each province and territory can develop projects best suited to their respective circumstances and needs. Based on these priorities, a jurisdiction will bring projects forward to Infoway for consideration. Each approved project is funded by one or more investment program and managed by the individual jurisdiction.

Five hundred million dollars was allocated to Infoway in the Government of Canada’s 2009 Economic Action Plan. Infoway has since developed new investment strategies that aim to provide tangible value to clinicians and to Canadians. Clinicians and patients will benefit from these new funding initiatives in the following ways:

  • Up to 12,000 additional community-based clinicians across Canada will adopt and use an electronic medical record (EMR) system that gives them a clearer picture of their patients’ overall health
  • Patients will be better informed and empowered to manage their interactions with the health care system through electronic access to their health records and the ability to book appointments and refill medications online
  • The rapid advancement and deployment of new innovations in health information and communications technologies that have demonstrable value and can be rapidly replicated across the country.
