Foundational Programs

Since its inception in 2001, Infoway has received $2.45 billion from the federal government through seven separate grants. This money has been used to co-invest with the provinces and territories and other partners in more than 400 projects. Below are a few examples of how these investments are making a difference in Canada:

  • 85 per cent of primary care physicians are now using electronic medical records
  • 100 per cent of X-rays, MRIs, CTs and similar imaging in hospitals is now digital
  • Telehealth videoconferencing is now available in 98 per cent of hospitals
  • 97 per cent of lab test results are now digital

Infoway uses a gated funding approach which means that project sponsors receive payment only when agreed-upon milestones are met.

Consumer Health Solutions – Investments help provide Canadians with electronic access to their health information and health care services, helping them manage their own care.

Diagnostic Imaging Systems – Investments enable authorized health care providers to access and view diagnostic images (X-rays, ultrasounds, MRI and CT images) electronically regardless of where the images were created, allowing for faster diagnosis and treatment.

Drug Information Systems – Investments enable authorized health care providers to access, manage, share and safeguard patients' medication histories, check for drug interactions and prevent medication abuse.

EMR & Integration – Investments help increase the number of clinicians adopting and using electronic medical record (EMR) systems, which give providers a more complete picture of their patients' health.

Infostructure – Investments help develop common standards and architecture to enable interoperability of digital systems, improving access to and sharing of health information, safeguarding privacy and security and reducing inefficiencies.

Innovation & Adoption – Investments in demonstration projects help build a community of innovators who are improving health care for patients and their care givers and health care providers.

Interoperable EHR – Investments help build interoperable EHR (iEHR) systems to enable authorized health care providers to view a patient's essential health information, which improves Canadians' access to health services, enhances the quality of care and patient safety, and improves health care system efficiencies.

Laboratory Information Systems – Investments help enable authorized health care providers to view lab test results, regardless of where the test was conducted, allowing faster diagnoses and treatment and reducing duplicate and unnecessary tests.

Patient Access to Quality Care – Investments help to improve access to quality care and reduce wait times.

Public Health Surveillance – Investments help implement solutions for the management and control of vaccine inventories and immunization programs, and the identification of infectious diseases outbreaks.

Registries – Investments help implement registries that accurately identify patients and authorized health care providers.

Telehealth – Investments help provide patients, including those in rural and remote areas, and First Nations communities, with timely access to specialized care, reducing travel time and costs for patients and reducing overall health system costs.
