Nipissing University Educator Recognized for Leadership in Digital Health

Associate Professor receives Nursing Faculty E-Health Award

January 22, 2014 (North Bay, ON) – The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) and Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) awarded Dr. Aroha Page, associate professor, Nipissing University, with the 2013 Nursing Faculty E-Health Award at an award ceremony today. Member of Parliament (MP) Jay Aspin was on-hand to present the award, which celebrates leadership in e-health nursing education.

“On behalf of the citizens of Nipissing-Timiskaming I would like to congratulate Dr. Page for her fine work and this honour which has been bestowed upon her,” said Jay Aspin, MP Nipissing-Timiskaming. “It is a privilege for us to have a person of her calibre accomplishing these notable endeavours in our region.”

Through her role as a leader, teacher, mentor and advocate, Dr. Page is advancing e-health competence in her students at all levels. Her curriculum links e-health within nursing’s practice framework and includes students developing a knowledge translation website.

“Congratulations to Dr. Page for consistently demonstrating progressive leadership and innovation in merging areas of e-health and nursing,” said Dr. Cynthia Baker, executive director, Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing.

The Nursing Faculty E-Health Award is an important component of the CASN and Infoway Nurses in Training project, aimed at improving graduates’ preparedness for work in technology-enabled environments by integrating digital health into nursing curricula on a pan-Canadian level for the first time. The project currently involves educators and students at 91 nursing degree-granting colleges and universities across Canada.

“Tomorrow’s clinicians need to be digitally-savvy to deliver the best possible patient care,” explained Maureen Charlebois, chief nursing executive and group director, Clinical Adoption, Canada Health Infoway. “This award recognizes Dr. Page’s work in helping to advance future nursing practice with informatics.”

“Congratulations to Dr. Page on earning the Nursing Faculty E-Health Award for her ability to demonstrate exceptional leadership in e-health nursing education,” said Dr. Mike DeGagné, Nipissing University president. “Having committed professors who are at the leading edge of technology, like Dr. Page, is a tremendous benefit to our students, and especially nursing students, as they learn best practices in preparation for a rewarding career.”
