Electronic medical record system brings improved health care to the Northwest Territories

Dr. Ewan Affleck is the medical director for the Yellowknife Health and Social Services Authority (YHSSA) in the Northwest Territories.

He is an avid supporter of electronic medical record (EMR) systems and has led the implementation of one in his health region.

The YHSSA’s EMR system is used in 12 clinical locations across the region. In six locations, patient charting is done and, in the others, including the Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife, the system is used as a viewer and also for messaging. The EMR is accessed by 130 licensed clinicians – physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and clinical assistants – as well as staff in the home care, family counselling, public health, quality assurance and information technology departments.

Dr. Affleck talks about the benefits of the EMR system for health care providers as well as for patients, and how it is helping to improve the delivery of health care in the Northwest Territories.
