Rutland Medical Associates is a family practice in Kelowna, British Columbia.
The doctors and staff decided to implement an electronic medical record (EMR) system when they were confident that the technology was where it needed to be, and when they felt there was adequate funding to help with costs.
With their office manager acting as the team leader for the project, they researched the available vendors, then set up group sessions to talk to the vendors and test the products. They ultimately chose a system that they felt was the most user-friendly for all staff. They began implementing the EMR system in phases in the spring of 2010. The medical office assistants (MOAs) started using it first, followed in the summer of 2010 by doctors and the nurse practitioner.
Four staff members talk about the benefits they are already seeing from using their EMR system.
