Only a third of those who need mental health services in Canada actually receive them, which is why the theme of this year’s annual Mental Health Week, “GET LOUD,” is appropriate.
Getting loud is something that needs to happen in the workplace, as 78 per cent of those diagnosed with depression keep it to themselves at work, according to the Global and Economic Roundtable on Addictions and Mental Health, 2007. On any given week, at least 500,000 employed Canadians are unable to work due to a mental disorder (Statistics Canada Labour Force Report 2010). This is why mental health is the focus of our employee Wellness Program this quarter.
At Infoway, we are committed to creating and maintaining a healthy and safe workplace, which includes mental health. We hope others also take time this week to get a better understanding of mental health and take action to take care of themselves and support others.
