New Brunswick Clinicians to Receive Mentorship from Peers to Effectively Use Technology in Practice

(Fredericton) – In partnership with Canada Health Infoway (Infoway), Velante announced today the launch of the interdisciplinary NB Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Peer to Peer Program, which will increase support for clinicians in New Brunswick (NB) as they transition from paper-based to EMR systems.

"The effective use of technology in clinical practice is essential to enabling timely and secure access to the health information clinicians need to make care decisions," said Maureen Charlebois, chief nursing executive and group director, Clinical Adoption, Canada Health Infoway. "Support from experienced colleagues can help clinicians make this happen."

Infoway's clinical engagement strategy brings together clinicians in leadership, practice, and education to ensure clinical value is achieved in digital health. As part of this strategy, Infoway supports clinicians in the ongoing adoption and use of digital health in Canada through investments in peer network projects that provide "peer-to-peer" support. Peer leaders providing this mentoring support can positively impact their colleagues' abilities to embrace digital health in their clinical practice.

New Brunswick joins other provinces already involved in the pan-Canadian Clinician Peer Network which provides access to best practices and lessons learned from other peer networks across the country and the opportunity to engage with their peer leader colleagues.

"Having access to the right leaders with relevant experience is vital when implementing EMRs into a clinical practice," said Dr Camille Haddad, President Elect of the New Brunswick Medical Society. "The NB EMR Peer to Peer Program will provide the support needed to make this transition, speeding up the adoption process and resulting in better health services for patients across New Brunswick."

As of March 2014, Infoway has created 10 Peer Networks that have engaged more than 350 peer leaders and 10,000 of their colleagues. The NB EMR Peer to Peer Program is part of Infoway's clinical engagement strategy to support the effective use of digital health solutions to enable patient-centred care in clinical practice.
