We chose “A Conversation about Digital Health” as the theme for Infoway’s 2015-2016 Annual Report because we think there has been a significant shift over the past few years in the quality of the conversations between clinicians, and between clinicians and their patients.
Digital health has contributed to these improved conversations because it has greatly improved the richness and timeliness of the information being exchanged. This is absolutely critical in an environment as complex as health care, where there are so many interactions and so much information being shared.
When clinicians have the right tools and the right information, patients get more appropriate and more timely care, while clinicians are able to work more effectively and efficiently. All of this contributes to cost savings and a more sustainable health system for Canada.
Infoway is proud that digital health and the work we’ve done with our partners is enabling these improved conversations. Thanks to digital health:
- Canadians and our health care system have realized an estimated $16 billion in benefits since 2007;
- The number of clinicians who are actively using two or more electronic health record systems to provide better care to their patients has increased by more than 50 per cent in the past year;
- Three-quarters of family physicians are now using electronic medical records to record information gathered during a patient’s visit;
- About 5,000 patients were enrolled in telehomecare programs in 2015-2016, enabling them to stay in their own homes while being monitored electronically by clinicians in other locations; and
- More than 11,000 patients, families and caregivers are enrolled in projects enabling them to view health information, book appointments or consult with providers online.
Our collective achievements during the past fiscal year have set the stage for the work that is now underway with our many partners across Canada. Renewed capitalization from the federal government in Budget 2016 is enabling us to focus on two priority areas: developing a multi-jurisdiction e-prescribing solution to help clinicians increase patient safety by improving accuracy and reducing errors with prescriptions; and increasing telehomecare to help Canadians with chronic conditions live well at home.
We are also continuing to partner with the jurisdictions to leverage our foundational investments, as well as patient online services that have been so critical to making health care more accessible for patients and more sustainable for funders.
All of us at Infoway are energized by these initiatives which will help accelerate effective, timely conversations within the health system. We believe digital health will continue to make a significant difference in the lives of Canadians and it will contribute to the sustainability of our health care system.
