Public Health Surveillance

Canada Health Infoway's (Infoway's) Public Health Surveillance investment program supports jurisdictional and pan-Canadian projects that implement solutions for the identification, management and control of infectious diseases that pose a threat to the public's health.

In March 2004, taking into account the lessons learned from the SARS outbreak, the federal government assigned Infoway the task of developing a Canada-wide communicable disease surveillance system in partnership with the provinces and territories.

How will Canadians benefit?

  • A Public Health Surveillance program will better control infectious disease outbreaks.
  • New systems will enable authorized health care providers to quickly and accurately detect potential outbreaks.
  • Better systems for managing vaccinations will make it easier to treat infectious diseases.
